GU: What inspired you to start an online clothing boutique?
ILB: I was inspired to start an online clothing boutique because I’ve always loved fashion, I have a bit of a shopping addiction, and I have always had a dream of starting my own business. Something that I could dream up and be creative with.
GU: We love the name Iron and Lace Boutique, where does it come from?
ILB: The name Iron and Lace comes from inspiration from my own life events. When I was growing up my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer, and the name Iron and Lace relates directly to that. “Strong as Iron, Unique as Lace”. When she was going through everything she was super strong and I was so proud of her for that - Strong as Iron. Cancer affects so many people either directly, or they know a family member or friend who it affects. Every story involving cancer is unique and every case is unique - unique as Lace. I not only apply this to the name but the mission of the whole Boutique. A percentage of sales goes toward cancer research.
GU: How would you describe the style of Iron and Lace Boutique? Who are your customers?
ILB: I would say the style of Iron and Lace Boutique is trendy/boho/beachy chic. I like to pick super unique items and definitely incorporate a lot of my own style into ILB clothing.
GU: What has been the worst day you have had so far as a business owner and how did you overcome it?
ILB: The worst day as a business owner so far, was the day I realized I’ve put so much into the business (money, time, energy, passion) and that I would just have to hope that is a success. I want people to fall in love with the boutique just as much as I have. I almost feel like it’s an extension of who I am, and it can be really nerve-wracking putting yourself out there and diving in head first.
GU: In your opinion, what are three traits every business owner must possess to be successful?
ILB: Three traits a business owner should have include...tough skin, persistence beyond what you thought you needed, and an adventurous spirit for the ability to just have fun with it.
GU: What are your plans for the future of Iron and Lace Boutique?
ILB: I will be making an official announcement shortly, but we are going to be creating a mommy and me collection at Iron and Lace. I recently had my first daughter, and I get really excited thinking about the matching items I will get to wear with her. I want to create that excitement for other moms so they will get to experience that bonding with their daughters as well!
GU: Lastly, you must have an all-time favorite piece that you can’t imagine your boutique without. What would that piece be?
ILB: The lace bracelets! They represent those loved ones that are fighting against cancer. Think of them as a live strong type bracelet. But I’m in love with all the pieces in the boutique! I carefully hand pick every one of them. :)
GU: Anything else you would like to add?
